ARCHITECTURE

In his conception of architecture – in the construction of private homes, restaurants and any other creative endeavors, Rahim’s work is informed by a tireless search for beauty. This materializes in a myriad of small details that create spectacular wholes. In every one of his masterpieces the eye wanders from the wood of the ceilings to the Moroccan-looking bronze lamp shades; from the combination of unpolished metal and old wooden planks to the rough canvas that upholsters the sofas; from the orientalist extravaganza of the bathrooms to the intimate tone of the light design.

Every house that Rahim concieved has a unique feature that catches the imagination. In Ehsan’s House the mud-plastered spiraled ceilings have a mesmerizing effect. In Karte Se House the porch framed with ancient Central Asian columns creates the perfect setting for an old-fashioned spy story. In Blossom House a large window frames a very old mulberry tree thus producing a still-life celebration of the grace of nature.

Through a combination of brickwork and mud plaster mixed with wheat straw, Rahim builds domes, niches and vaulted ceilings that are realized in such a way that they do not require the use of steel structures during the construction process.

Traditionally built domes are an essential character of his architectures.Rahim works closely with blacksmiths, stone-and brick-layers, and carpenters so that every detail is specifically tailored to create unique environments. Through the merging of the old and the new, Rahim’s architectures and interior designs are characterized by an ever surprising visual journey. With the help of traditionally trained laborers, Rahim is able to produce exquisite pieces of intricate mud plaster-work, thus contributing to the revival of an ancient tradition that is almost extinct in urban contexts.
